Two years after its release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is still firing on all its cylinders as it welcomes Radical Reptiles, a new DLC pack that adds two new fighters to the roster and a new way to rock with the base game’s already fantastic soundtrack.
Veterans of the franchise are sure to recognize both newcomers from the original TV show from the 1980s, while others might be scratching their heads over them, but no one can deny that they’re more than welcome additions to an already packed brawler. I’m talking about Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa, who both starred in episodes of the hit kids show and can be considered deeper than most cuts, but considering that Shredder’s Revenge was full of those in the first place, with its first DLC, Dimension Shellshock going in even deeper, bringing Usagi Yojimbo into the fray. Having both Mondo and Lisa, who play fairly different from the rest as more of a duo of crowd-control focused fighters that do extremely well in multiplayer sessions.
Developer Dotemu did an incredible job at translating what made the Turtles a household name 40-plus years ago by delivering a game that not only felt like a natural continuation of the arcade classic Turtles in Time, but grew and developed into a thing of its own. That includes a surprising amount of depth to its combat system, not to mention some clever twists to what would be considered standard game modes with its survival/roguelite challenge set. To top it all off, a heck of fun online component that brought together friends to bash Foot soldiers, a huge blast.
It’s worth noting how this DLC works for owners of the original game. Much like Dimension Shellshock, Radical Reptiles is paid download, at $3.99. However, there’s a free portion of the update that includes a new remix mode for the base game that rejiggers the soundtrack, featuring guest artists such as famous chiptune YoutTube sensation Button Masher and Keiji Yamagishi, of Ninja Gaiden fame, to name a few.
All things considered, Radical Reptiles is a pretty good deal, given that the new characters can also be leveled and powered up, much like the rest, adding even more to do in the game, especially for those who have already maxed the whole crew out. Shredder’s Revenge was one of my favorite games of 2022 and with this DLC, I’ll keep playing it all the way into 2025.
